We hope that your mahabis stay nice and fresh forever, but life happens. On the off chance that they need a clean, you'll find the cleaning instructions for the different mahabis models below.
Please note that we don't recommend machine washing any style of mahabis, but you can use our Slipper & Sneaking Cleaning Kit and the Botanical Freshener Spray. We recommend purchasing this to best care for your mahabis, but if you want to clean them without this, our best practices are below.
Cleaning your mahabis Classic, Curve & Aero (or any footwear with wool/ natural fibre uppers):
These slippers cannot be machine washed so to keep them clean, we recommend hand washing with a wet sponge or cloth and leaving to air dry. Or use the spray eco cleaner from our cleaning kit and work in with the microfibre cloth.
The footbeds should be hand-washed with a gentle detergent, rinsed in clean, cold water and left to air dry outside the slippers.
Wool is naturally odour-resistant, but if you do find your slippers getting a little smelly, we recommend hand washing your footbeds and using our Botanical Shoe Freshener to deodorise your slippers.
Cleaning your mahabis Mule:
These slippers cannot be machine washed so to keep them clean, we recommend hand washing with a wet sponge. Leave the slippers to dry naturally and do not put them in the tumble dryer.
These slippers cannot be machine washed so to keep them clean, we recommend hand washing with a wet sponge on both the upper and the sole and leaving to air dry.
The footbeds should be hand-washed with a gentle detergent, rinsed in clean, cold water and left to air dry outside the slippers.
They are naturally breathable shoes, so you shouldn't have to do this often!
Cleaning your mahabis Vista & Aurora:
These slippers cannot be machine washed so to keep them clean, we recommend hand washing with a wet sponge.
You can gently rub the upper clean and then leave it to dry naturally. Do not tumble dry.
For the shearling lining, it's always best to use lukewarm water and a mild detergent or shampoo (baby shampoo is normally good for this), but a specialist sheepskin shampoo or cleaner is always best. Try not to get the slipper too wet, as it might take a while to dry out.
The insoles can be removed and hand-washed with a gentle detergent, rinsed in clean, cold water and left to air dry outside the slippers.
Cleaning your mahabis Meribel (shearling):
Your meribel slippers are not machine washable and shouldn't go in the tumble dryer either. Sheepskin/ shearling is naturally dirt-repellent, so shaking and airing now and then in high humidity can be sufficient. To give them a clean, we recommend using lukewarm water and mild detergent (ideally, cleaners or shampoos designed for sheepskin). After cleaning, you can gently stretch and rub the skin when damp, this will help it keep its fluffy shape.
Let them air dry somewhere warm, but not on or right next to a radiator, as this may be too much heat.
The insoles can be removed and hand-washed with a gentle detergent, rinsed in clean, cold water and left to air dry outside the slippers.
Cleaning your mahabis Sandals, Sierra & Verbier (suede):
We don't recommend using any wet cleaning products on suede uppers, as it can change the colour or texture of the material. That said, you can give them a clean with a damp, lint-free cloth - gently rub the upper in straight motions (switch up directions as you go) and this will help to remove any dirt without pushing it deeper into the fibres. Any moisture on the cloth might temporarily darken the colour of the suede, but this should air-dry.
Suede shoes also benefit from brushing with a suede brush (or a clean, new toothbrush can work) which will raise the fibres of the suede and remove any surface dirt. A protective spray can also help to guard against stains and help the material resist water penetration.
The footbeds can be removed and hand-washed with a gentle detergent, rinsed in clean, cold water and then left to air-dry outside of the sandals.
